Thanks in advance.

I've read through the documentation on how to do Inlays using the V-carve tool paths. My first two projects came out very nice.

However... I could tell there was a 'hollow gap' behind my inlay..

60 degree 1/2" V-Bit

For the Pocket - I used a Start Depth of .0
I used a flat Depth of .3

For the inlay - I used a Start Depth of .1
I used a flat depth of .2

Q. Can someone explain to me what I should change to get a closer fit - so that I don't have the 'hollow gap' behind the inlay (small gap needed for glue I assume).

Q. Can you explain the logic of the different Start/Flat depths in the inlay?

Thanks!

Adrian,

I appreciate the link.. however, I have that document - and it doesn't answer the questions I posted. It states there will be a .2 GAP between the pocket and the inlay... that is too much for glue!

If I want a .1 gap.. would I use a .1 start and a .3 flat dept for the inlay?

Please see my original post for my questions.

Thank you

Brent,
On the several I've done, I aimed at a Zero glue gap. On the one I "dissected" It appeared to be almost fully seated (about .005-.01" gap) using these settings.
On your .3" depth female pocket, For the male I would try .15" Start Depth with a .15" Flat depth. (it works well for me)
The original thread by Paul Zank may be 20+ pages long, but is interesting reading to follow the development and evolution of a great technique.

Also some interesting tips and responses to my questions in this thread.

Hope this helps,

Here's how I understand it - On the male inlay, the start depth plus the flat depth should equal the pocket depth. The start depth represents how much of the edge of the inlay will be in glue contact with the pocket. The flat depth is how much space between the pocket bottom and the inlay (for glue residual) I usually use pocket depth of 0.20, inlay start depth of 0.15 and flat depth of 0.05.

Interestingly, same idea works regardless of v angle used, as long as the same angle is used on both of course. The steeper the angle produces less glue length on the edges so one can compensate by increasing the start depth if needed.

I hope that is somewhat clear...
