View Full Version : How to suspend the 4" dust hose over 96" x 60" shopbot?

So I just set up ShopBot PRS ALPHA with a 96" x 60" bed. The back X rail is located parallel to and three feet away from a long cinder block wall that is 18 feet high.

Attached to the dust foot is a 4" diameter flexible plastic hose that is about 18 feet long. It connects to the dust collector system.

My problem is: I need to keep the long, 4 inch diameter, dust hose, off the table while the ShopBot is running.

Unfortunately, simply suspending the dust hose with bungee cords or wires that hang from the ceiling is not an option.

What is the best way to hold the hose up as the spindle moves?

Fabricate a lightweight arm and attach it to your wall so that it pivots above the shopbot. Run dust collection pipe or hose (and grounding wire) up and along that arm. Then you just have the small amount of flexible hose (and grounding wire) to connect to the shopbot. If you search on this forum you can find photos of how other people have done this.

If you are really cramped for overhead space like I am, I use a swing arm that rides on an arc above my table. The only issue has been that the turn tends to split the hose, I now need to replace it after five years. Use metal duct as much as possible to increase your DCs efficiency. Not pictured here is the arc that supports the end of the boom.

Depending on the size and power of your DC you can suspend it from the ceiling even if its a high one like mine. Russ

That is a nice simple solution. I like the idea of using it as an advertising space. Thanks

Who says you have to suspend it?
