Has any one tried Windows 10 with this soft wear yet?

I've been running VCarve (Partworks) and Aspire on it for a while now with no issues. I haven't tried (dared!) to use SB3 with it though.

Early report, I will eventually be trying Aspire etc... but have not yet. I brought one of my systems up to W10. So far, not so bad. It has an app store in it now, similar to the Apple and/or Android experience. I can see why they are giving W10 away "free" now. Done right... they'll make more money from the app store. I'm not completely opposed to the new model and GUI... I've been able to find everything so far (unlike the evil Windows 8) and it has an OK desktop feel to it. I'm still now sure how well it will fit into a corporate environment... I'd have to see Windows 10 Enterprise (I'm using W10 Pro) to see how they cope with the app store etc...

The Upgrade itself went very well, better than expected. So far everything works and nothing vanished, all my files are still present. I have a few more non-critical workstations around, like my media PC on the main TV etc... if those upgrade well I may upgrade my primary workstation before year end, but I'm not rushing to it.

I don't see the need to upgrade my W7 bot control PC, but I'm not seeing anything obvious that would prevent it from running on W10.

W10 seems to be much more "connected" than previous versions of Windows. By that I mean it seems more reliant on being online. The app store is integrated and when I logged on it wanted my local workstation password to combine my login with my Microsoft ID (my outlook.com login) and said next time I login to the PC, that is what I would use. I could have skipped that, but I wanted to see how it worked. Sure enough, next reboot it showed a list of accounts, the local accounts I didn't use were still present, but my local account "Robert" was missing and replaced with "Robert-h4bats..." my outlook/microsoft account and I had to use that password to login.

It scanned my network while upgrading, located my Canon Printer and installed drivers for it. However, it does not appear to have found my HP printer. I'm not fond of the network scanning, my primary workstation went all "red alert" on me when it started as I monitor for odd traffic and port scans etc...

I am unable to find Logoff or Lock. I have Sleep, Shutdown and Restart. Sleep does shut it down to power saving mode (so nothing is running, it is all suspended) and it does lock it for wake up. But how do I lock my workstation when I walk away but leave it running?

The boot up is actually a little faster than W7, by about 20 seconds, but I get a black screen for much of the boot process making me wonder if something has gone wrong. The feel is "faster" but I think that may be due to the more spartan graphics of the interface.

Open Questions (feel free to answer these if you know):
What happens if/when I use my MS login on multiple workstations?
Can I still login if not connected to the internet?
If so, how long can I be offline and still login? i.e. what if I shut it down for 30 days and come back, can I login "offline"?
Does it work with Aspire (Vcarve etc...) I'm pretty sure it will and I will test it and answer if no one beats me to it.
Does it work with the ShopBot control software? (same disclaimer as above)
How do I lock the workstation but leave everything running?

I'll post more as I learn, please do the same.

I also upgraded my CAD/CAM/Office desktop and a small notebook to Win10. Pretty easy upgrade, leaving all installed programs and settings in place. I ran my (non-shopbot) control software without problems but have also not trusted it enough to cut something with it.

One recommendation: Go through "Settings"/"Privacy" and turn off all the information sucking. Otherwise Microsoft will even track what you are writing (of course only to help you with product offers) or allow programs/apps to turn on the camera and mic without you knowing it. This operating system is one big piece of spyware.

The real money is in the data mining they will be doing, similar to Google. Read a few reports that they will be able to monitor every mouse click, every email, everything you do on your computer to be able to sell that data (anonymized supposedly) for targeted marketing.

Supposed to transfer common settings between multiple workstations when you use same MS login. I have two machines, one with Win 8 and one with Win 10 using same MS login, did notice some settings transferred when I setup Win 10.
Yes, you should be able to login when not connected to internet, and should be able to do that indefinitely. I believe it is possible to actually create a local login account, that doesn't use MS login.
I installed Aspire, ran a few times, didn't see any issues, but didn't use it in detail.
Have not tried it w/ SB control software.
Go to http://www.isunshare.com/windows-10/3-ways-to-lock-windows-10-computer.html for instructions on locking computer.

I have as well installed windows 10 and can verify aspire 3.5 will work with it with no issues. I did run into some issues with some other programs that I use (Corel Draw & Flexi) that I did have to run in compatability mode (win 7). So far so good. :)

Vcarve, AutoCAD 2002, DesignCAD 3D Max 18, printers and everything else run well. Not a single problem in setup. My first impression is that it seems to use less resources and is much faster.

I have it on 2 computers, so far everything runs, even my "Plex" system which hosts all of my movies/music and I have accessed it through my Roku. It runs Aspire 8.0 fine, no issues and have been using it to design a number of items. You can still lock it using the "Windows/start" key and "L" or use "Ctrl+Shift+Del" and it will ask what you want to do, such as lock the system.

I will be trying the control program in a couple of weeks on my 15" HP Envy X2 Tablet to see if it will run with it.

I haven't upgraded yet. I rarely do an upgrade when it's new, particularly when there are as many "changes" as 10 is supposed to have.
My design computer is running 7 Pro. SB control computer is still on XP Pro. They had to drag me into 7 Pro and I only did when so many programs, including my current Artcam Pro, upgraded to the point where they wouldn't work with XP Pro any longer. I understand that 8 has issues and therefore never upgraded to that even though that was also a "free" upgrade on my main design computer.
The interface on some programs I had used happily for years changed, IMHO, for the worse on versions that run on 7. Examples are Photoshop and Acrobat.
So for those who have been running 8 I understand the desire to get away from it.
But, for anyone who has upgraded from 7 to 10, can you quantify any possible improvements for you?

There was much ado about the Start screen and removal of the Start button/menu in Windows 8 and the lame fix for it in 8.1, but it's supposed to be back and much improved in 10. While it is better, I can relate to the opinions found here. Especially the part about 'letting the internet leak all over the start menu'.

The Start Menu Should Be Sacred (But It’s Still a Disaster in Windows 10) (http://www.howtogeek.com/224805/the-start-menu-should-be-sacred-but-its-still-a-disaster-in-windows-10/)

OK, continuing to Run Windows 10 here and upgraded my main workstation. I'll have to say, it's the first windows upgrade where things didn't feel backwards and all out of whack. I've been able to intuitively find things and it is faster on every pre-upgrade benchmark I ran, not by much, but faster. I'm running an 8 core system with 16GB RAM and a 1TB mirrored RAID.

So far, all programs work, Aspire 8, Corel X6, SnagIt Editor (runs better actually) etc... The only "major" program I have not tested yet is eCabinet Systems. Just lazy I guess.

I am used to the so called "start" menu. It is different and at first I didn't like it... but it's growing on me. I find if I just look around, I can find things and it does make sense.

I like the added native backup features, one reason I went ahead with the upgrade. You can maintain hourly backups of your files with history on a USB drive AND keep a system image on another drive that can be rotated to the safe etc... So far it seems to work well and it's the first time I think I may be able to use the native backup features and feel comfortable without going with a 3rd party solution.

Windows Defender is built in, it is Microsoft Security Essentials. I know some of you may not trust it, but from what I've learned about it I do. It is the same engine as the commercial corporate "Forefront" solution that Microsoft offers.

When running two screens, I get the start and task bar at the bottom of both screens. Only one system tray, but the task bar is duplicated. I actually like that.

So far, all I really don't like is all the carp that gets turned on. I feel like I spent an hour turning off stuff that sends information to Microsoft.

Harry,

You can disable the duplicate task bar if you want by right clicking on it / properties / Taskbar tab, last option checkbox is Multiple Displays, then uncheck "Show taskbar on all displays". I have 3 monitors on this system and really want the entire screen for Aspire and Outlook....

I use the "small" taskbar icons which shrinks it a bit and I'm on twin 24" monitors. Since I have to have a task bar on at least one monitor (I hate auto hide) the bottom of my right screen when I stretch Aspire across both is always open where the task bar would be anyway since I size it to fit the screen with the taskbar. It's great to be able to turn if off for those that don't want it, but I do kind of like it.

I LOVE the native virtual desktop functionality. I can have multiple virtual desktops open and easily switch between them. So I no longer have to minimize Aspire to switch to Corel or Outlook etc... and when I'm on one desktop I get a task bar specific to that environment, not every program that is open.

I also find "Godmode" reassuring as with it I can find anything I need if I don't want to have to search for it.
Just create a folder somewhere and rename it to GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}
Now when you open that folder, you get every control panel in one place.

I'm on my 19th upgrade now (family and friends!) and I've had no real issues with it all. As I've been running the preview for quite some time I was used to the interface but a few of my friends who were running 8.1 with Start8, ModernMix and direct boot to desktop (the setup I used for work) are bit a dissapointed about how little change there really is from that setup. Those who were running Windows 7 are more impressed with the ability to run the same style apps as they have on their mobile phones.

The easiest way to disable all the dial home stuff is to click on the custom install option when doing the upgrade. It's a few seconds work to turn those off that way. Mind you most people are sending far more information to Google already....

Want to get rid of the numerous preinstalled (http://www.howtogeek.com/224798/how-to-uninstall-windows-10s-built-in-apps-and-how-to-reinstall-them/) apps that Microsoft thinks you want leaking the internet in all over your start menu, but you really don't want?

I'm kind of in the camp of not liking it much. Besides it being ugly, it still feels like the tale of two OS's to me. Kind of "Jekyll and Hyde". :) Instead of the "Start" screen taking over the whole thing, it now just resides in the corner. Start10, Classic Start, etc. should continue to be a popular download/add-on.

For those that have run Windows since v3.1 and feel thrown under the proverbial bus, Classic Shell (http://www.classicshell.net/) is a wonderful thing. It makes your Vista, Win7, 8, 8.1, 10 desktop, menus and control panel look like WinXP.

I've never had an issue with it EVER - and, it runs on a SB control computer beautifully. Many times I have setup new ShopBots for people and they ordered a new computer with an operating system way newer than they were familiar with. To ease training confusion, I would install Classic Shell...which they all loved/love. Check it out...

As for Win10, I am going to wait a while. Last machine I did I put 8.1 Pro on it and it seems to be as good as Win7. I've got her right where I want her...so upgrading is just violating two age-old adages: 1) If it ain't broke don't fix it and 2) There is no such thing as free. Everything has a price.

I must admit I never understand why the start menu is the thing most people on the 'net are complaning about. Personally I haven't used the start menu more than rarely since XP. I can get 30 programs/apps on the taskbar in W10 (not that I use more than 12) and that's a much more efficient place to run from with jumplists attached to each one so I don't have to hunt through each program to find the recent file list plus I can pin the files I use all the time.

I must admit I never understand why the start menu is the thing most people on the 'net are complaning about.

People have enough new things to learn and keep up with on a daily basis - why change things for the sake of changing things? Imagine for the heck of it, they decided to change around the keys on a piano...or a new table saw that had the adjustments for the fence and blade + power switch in a non-intuitive place. It's like that. It ain't right...especially for older people that were once fluent and efficient in the not too distant past.

There are more of these people than you think - which I encounter when I go to their shop to train them. Learning to use a new CNC is enough of a challenge - having a non-intuitive computer only adds a lot of confusion for them. These are not stupid people - they are quite intelligent and talented. They have better things to do than re-learn how to use Windows all over again.

Many have built up enough hand/eye coordination and muscle memory to rip through the classic Windows interface they've used for years only to be bewildered on a new OS as to how to even get started when they turn it on for the first time. It's not a 'people are lazy/stupid' situation. It's more of a 'ram it down your throat we don't care what you want' thing. 99% only use a computer for social media, games and other time wasters to justify having a computer. I am speaking about those who use a workstation to do actual work.

Personally, I don't want my workstation to look like a tablet. I've got real work to do that involves a keyboard and mouse. I don't picture myself using a tablet to do CAD or 3D work. Ever. (Cintiq sculpting maybe) Stop making me relearn what should be 2nd nature. If it's a tablet, then toggle the option for the interface to be suited for that. If a workstation, then toggle the option for classic view. It's all easily done with not much code. Why isn't this this an option?

Does that make sense?

I see very little difference desktop wise between XP, Windows 7, Windows 8 (boot into desktop mode) and Windows 10. Everything important is in standard places and the features added at each release (like snapping) build on the base of what is there and make it easier to use.

Windows 8 I can completely understand people not liking the out of the box experience with that but I really don't see that big a difference with the others. Looks like I'm in the minority yet again though. :)

Importing photos and videos, what a PITA that was. If you've tried in Windows 10 you know it forces you to use Photos and will put all photos and videos into the Pictures folder without any tags.

When using an SD or other memory card. Here is how to tag your videos or photos and force it to put them where you want. You may need to play with the procedure a bit as I'm still working through this.

First, do nothing when you insert the card, close Photos or ignore the popup thing that slides out etc...
Go to File Explorer, This PC and right click on the SD card drive, in my case it is drive E
Select Open as Portable Device
Now, in the menu bar on the LEFT, right click on the drive letter (again E for me)
Select Import Pictures and Videos.
You can now set the name and add tags (supposedly).
Under More Options you can set the location to import, in my case I send videos to K:\Videos

This worked for me with the exception of my tags didn't appear.

You can also use the Review, organize and group items to import. If you have multiple events on a single card you may prefer to use that feature.

Hope that helped someone.

If someone finds or knows of a better way to do this, please post.

Start menu, Settings, Devices, Autoplay (left hand side), Memory card, Import Photos and Videos.
That only allows me to select "Import photos and videos (Photos)"
That opens Photos - forces me to choose which drive to import from (stupid since I just put the card in, why should have to choose which drive from a list of drives when I have no idea what drive letter it may have assigned to the card I just inserted?)
After that I get one option, import into the pictures folder, that's it, I can't choose where to put my videos.
That is what I don't want to do.
I want to put my videos into a videos folder on a separate drive.

The default behaviour sounds good to me given the number of calls I've had from family and friends over the years who have no idea where they've put their pictures on the drive. ;)

You can create a shortcut that makes importing in a similar way to the "Load as Portable device" a bit easier.

Right click and create a new shortcut. Set the location to %SystemRoot%\system32\rundll32.exe "%SystemDrive%\Program Files\Windows Photo Viewer\photoAcq.dll",PhotoAndVideoAcquire

Yeah, a distributed update will reduce the bandwidth load on MS servers and internet connections, probably saving them millions of dollars. But I do wonder how long before some hacker figures a way to implant a trojan in the distributed feed and infect millions of computers overnight.

Maybe someone will come up with something similar to Black Viper for clean machines, and have really good guide on how to shut off all the privacy stealing options that are on by default.

Not really. The biggest potential security hole is the connection to the PC itself. The mechanism and security for applying the patch to the OS is the same whether it's downloaded from a central server or downloaded peer to peer. If it was something that hackers could do then they could do it with the pre-10 update mechanism as well as it would require hacking Microsoft servers to get the cryptographic keys either way.

No change here but I installed W10 as a clean install and turned all the tracking stuff off in the custom install option that it presents on the way through. Are you relying on the built-in virus checker? It's really poor (ie virtually useless) at stopping most malicious scripts on websites.
