not sure how practical it is but might as well ask. this is a light sign maybe 20 pounds. but it is overhead. I doubt I could paint ss chain well enough it could be powder coarded but not sure if they want to pay for that.

I would suggest welding the chain links neatly where welds won't be noticed, then clean it and paint it? I would get spray cans of Rustoleum. Try the leak seal for a texture finish or the painters touch 2x ultra cover. Clean up the chain real good before spraying should work great.

I have bought vinyl coated chain at Lowes or Home Depot. They have it in white and it is cheap.

thats what I was thinking. I don't want to paint it if I don't have too. if I have to get metal galvanized seems out as it will streak down the sign? they will have to use quick links to hang it.

Free hanging signs are trouble- and I would think using chain would compound it. David is a sign guy too and has the correct idea- weld so it will look like
it hangs if you must.

I have only made a few but I make them two part and make them with a pocket to enclose a large ss t nut inside. so the hanging hardware can't pull out. They are going to attach the sign themselves so I have to make it easy for them. home depot only has plastic colored chain unless i want orange. so I guess I will paint it.

It must be lowes that has it then because I use it for anchor chain it is easier on the boat to not have bare metal links hitting the boat. I also recommend it to my customers for the same use. They do make some marine specific chain that is dipped and the links are somewhat fused together this might work even better it is expensive but doesn't flex very much for that reason I don't like it for my purpose but it maybe better for your application. I will see if I can find a link to it. Looks like Wally World has it. http://www.walmart.com/ip/SeaChoice-44461-Anchor-Lead-Chain-PVC-Coated/32739518?sourceid=csesh019b733aaabba7486f849d444bc 272c06b&wmlspartner=shoppingcom&affcmpid=3355839013&tmode=0000&bcfg=19f573d1d18b00bb445709b77f4d0705&veh=cse

The stuff I was originally talking about each link is dipped separately and is not fused together like the marine specific stuff.

Steve,
How about a pic of your proposed install drawing? A pic and size of finished sign would be great.

How low below the bracket is the sign hanging? What material and how thick are you working with for the substrate?

Maybe a pic seems like a pain? Come on man, if you can run a Shopbot CNC I am sure you can take a pic with your smartphone and upload. I like photos, then I can understand.

I have installed many swinging sign since 1999 and had many failures. We started welding the chain to make it strong and no problems since. However, its been many years since I have done a swinging sign, but it all comes down to the basics I think?
