View Full Version : Brady Watson scanning service
A while back I got Brady to scan a silver dollar for me. The resolution of his scans is incredible, and I used the reliefs on a small (3.5" diameter) case for a silver dollar. The case is made of Grenadilla (African Blackwood).
Speeds and feeds used:
1/8" ball, 15000 RPM, 20% (.025") STEP OVER, 60 IPM
1/32" ball, 15000 RPM, 35% (.011") STEP OVER, 60 IPM
1/64"ball, 18000 RPM, 10% (.0015") STEP OVER, 25 IPM
Here is a short video of the 1/64" end mill making the final cut:

Nice work and a good idea for the case.

Nice edge cut pattern. Very well done.
I just find humor in seeing a big machine spinning such a tiny bit, I'm blown away that the end does not snap off from minor pressure.
You used a lathe to get the side design?
Really nice work. Thanks for sharing.

What a great idea for displaying the real thing. Good job to both of you.
Thanks a lot guys. Yes, to engrave the edge design I used a 4th axis indexer. Scott, I usually use Atrax end mills from Enco, but they only go down to 1/32". The 1/64" end mill is from Harvey Tool. I had two of them and broke the first one immediately at 45 ipm. Then I slowed it down to 25 ipm and had no more problems.

Beautiful work
What machine do you have - Desktop or a conventional Shopbot?
that is some of the finest resolution carving I have ever seen.
Thank you Bob. I have been reading this forum since 2006 when I got my first cnc router. Actually I read several different cnc forums every morning. My reason for posting this was a recent thread about cheap 3D scanners. I have used Brady to scan items before this, and I thought it would be a good time to show off the quality of his work and the results that his scans make possible. It just so happens that my current machine is another brand, but I have learned a lot on this forum, and I am grateful if I can give something back.
