Getting ready to cut stainless for the first time. Can someone tell me what is the best feed rate and spindle speed to cut 21 gage .034 stainless steel? Using a unsrud 83-ALTN 1/8" cutter. Cutting small keyholes into a full 4' by 8' sheet.
Thanks in advance.

Your best bet is to ask your Onsrud dealer or call Onsrud's technical department directly. They should be able to give you a chipload range for that tool, and from there you can backplot it to get the RPM and MS. You can use the chipload calculator in SB3 to help you with this.

Thanks Gary. For those that don't know, Gary is an Onsrud dealer & gives excellent support. Don't forget about him next time you need tools.
Ludlow - FYI: 18 IPM = 0.3 IPS. In order to make your tool go that slow (regardless of what your MS command is), you will have to go in and change your XY Move Speed (1st line) in the VR settings in SB3 to .2 or the tool will only go as slow as the default, which is .4 IPS.

AH. That explains why changes in a VCP file to .35IPS and then .3IPS & then .25 didn't change tearout the other day. (Duh)
Thanks Brady!!

I should add...Remember to change your VR settings back again or your tool might dwell too long in the corners (and burn) or just give soggy performance, like in this case (http://www.talkshopbot.com/forum/showthread.php?22042-Jerky-moves-and-lost-steps).

The primary issue with any sort of cutting of stainless steels is it's tendency to work harden. Any slow down or god forbid dwell in the cut path and your in deep doggy dodo. Broken or dulled cutters, burring, burnishing, etc. Once you start your committed must keep moving.
