View Full Version : Vacuum Hold Down for Buddy?

Hello - I just purchased a used Buddy that is about 2-3 years old. I had been reading about ShopBots for quite a while learning all I could and then an opportunity to buy one used came up and I jumped on it. I've only had it a few days but did get it all hooked up and working.

I was just beginning to work on vacuum table approaches (and actually ordered a Fein Turbo III) because I knew I wanted to use it - but then I came to the realization that the buddy has a big ol aluminum table sitting there.

I've been trying to search for anybody doing vacuum with a buddy and am not having much luck.

Are any of you other buddy owners doing vacuum hold down? If so, how?

Are there any other aluminum table options?

One idea we came up with was extending the table out past the usual y axis length and then using a plenum bleeder board on top of a sealed MDF base. Cut a hole in TOP of the bleeder and instead of pulling the vacuum from the bottom, pull it from the top and off to the side out of the way of the router (if that makes any sense).

I have no idea if that technique will work or not but right now, this looks like the most possible option I am going to try. A vacuum shouldn't care if it comes from the top or bottom. I just have to make sure everything is sealed up right.

If this works out, I'll take pictures and document it for future use.

I also just found the one and only Trupan supplier in my city so I will post that over in the other forum.

Thanks,

Jeff

I can't wait to see what you come up with. In the mean time, send me some Arthur Bryant's BBQ

Jeff,
Here's one option that was done using a "vacuum mask"on top of a PVC plenum. The yellow air hose is simply the same stuff you'd use for a nail gun, etc. if you type "Buddy vacuum"into the Google search engine on the Talk Shopbot page you'll get a few hits...

Ok - thanks for those links. That is an interesting idea to come in from the side like that. Greg - I'll have to study that posting more in depth to see what is going on there.

Eric - Yep, lived here all my life - was raised on BBQ. My favorite place nowdays is Jack's Stack.

I'll keep you guys up to date on what I can get working. Thanks.

I built a simplified version of the 9-15 open source vac (thanks Brady) as well as the 1"x3" idea that Brady used under the aluminum table. I pretty much do what ever Brady does and it seems to work out
. just make sure you have your aluminum long enough to clear the cross member.

Here is my buddy vac system. It is a version of Brady's design. I use a single fein and a plenum with a spoil board that has vacuum holes located for various part holding fixtures. A lot of my parts are held at different angles than flat on the board hence the need for fixtures. Also some of the parts are small and need additional holding clamps so the clamps are held by vacuum to the table. Anyway here are some pics.
The rectangular tube under the table is a pvc fence rail and it fits nicely between the table and the frame and allows the table to move in the x axis.
