I have an early PRS standard- the last year or so it has been getting
fussier connecting to the SB controller, often have to run the find
connection utility a couple times before it selects port 6 and connects.
Today it will not connect at all. No changes from the last time I connected- I tried the View USB utility and I can see the ATEN usb to
serial bridge under one of the USB hubs (altho not an extended hub
like the pdf indicates). I have never used an external usb hub which
some people use, and I went to the local BestBuy and all they had was
Belkin powered hubs for $50... I don't really believe that that is the
problem since I can see the usb to serial bridge. Any thoughts before
I call the long suffering SB folks tomorrow? Thanks Gene

PS- using a Dell XP laptop and tried unchecking all the allow to disconnect
power on the USB hubs

Sounds like a failing usb port did you try another port or change to a different computer. Dell's a notorious for usb problems

My Win XP power>advanced does not look like that? Thanks Gene

And yes I tried a different usb port with no luck. When I run the port finder it lingers on the number of the port that the usb to serial bridge is plugged
into for a couple seconds and then goes past it... so I *think* it sees it but does not connect. I do not like laptops but the size is handy for my setup.

Gene:
Although I have a different control system (Alpha) now I had the same symptoms a couple of months ago and it turned out to be something in the SB card died.
New card-No problems since.

Now that the day is done... good and bad news. I always tell my peeps that it is almost always an operator error- no matter what the problem is. And so,
after chasing this for 4 hours on and off, it was an old fart error. I disconnected a cord a couple days ago moving a ladder. Thanks to all who tried to help for
your kindness. Thanks Gene
