So down at the McGrew camp this past May, I purchased a "bumpbar" (remote keyboard) from KRC. Shopbot now offers them for sale. At the camp, there was just the program and overlay for the keypad for the Camaster CNC. Now the Shopbot program and overlay is available.

Just finally had the time to set it up (its quite simple) and try it out today. You can move the XYZ around, step in fine and very fine mode (50 thou and 3 thou increments), do the XY zero routine, Z zero routine, start and stop programs.

This will be very, very nice when setting up bits, and now being able to be in front of the cutter rather than going back and forth from the computer keyboard.

Just thought I'd pass the info along in case other might want to get one.

I bought one a while back also. Its great when you want to be up close to the spindle to get an exact line up, and you cant reach the keyboard. Real simple to install, just plug and play.

Thanks for the heads up- just ordered mine. Very reasonable price for the value it will bring in efficiency.

Merry Christmas to me!

Has anyone ever tried using teamviewer and a tablet or smart phone? I use teamviewer and logmein all the time to remotely control different PCs in our operation, but have not found the need on the CNCs. Seems like a simpler concept to just take control of the machine with your cell phone/tablet and utilize the same interface.

They are 170 for the new version on the KRS site. Old ones discounted.

I bought one also. And have not set it up yet. Did you make up your own overlay?
Looks like its time to set it up

I've been using one of these for quite a while now and like it. Everything you could need and then some for commands right at the point of attack. Just need that big screen on the wall behind the Bot. ;)

Ken its so easy even I did it, lol.. and some days I have a hard time turning a computer on.

Go here:

http://bumpbar.com/

Click the "CNC users" icon. Then download the configuration program, and the shopbot file. Also you can print out the shopbot overlay. I just put heavy clear packing tape over mine but you can get fancy and laminate yours.

Once you have the config file loaded, you open it, plug in the bumpbar while holding two buttons down (there is a PDF explaining this on the site) and it enters program mode. Then select the Shopbot config file you downloaded and it will program the unit to correspond to the printed overlay.

Easy as that. When you're done just plug the bumpbar into your shopbot control computer and it is ready to go - no software to load or other things to do.

For me, using another keyboard, or my cellphone, etc isnt an attractive option. I dont have internet connection at the shop, and no wifi etc. This unit is completely sealed and dust free, and has a 15' cord or so. Lots of room to maneuver around the machine if needed. It has the basic commands that I need to set up a bit, slew the router around, zero things etc and three free buttons you can program to do what you want them to (although I dont know how exactly to do that currently).

In my opinion, I dont see how anything would be simpler - this thing has just the necessary buttons you need to set things up, and no screen required. Nothing to charge, nothing to worry about dropping and/or breaking. I can't see using my cell phone to do this, even my Iphone 6 screen is too small for my 45 yr old eyes (my close up vision sucks) and again, without any other computer paraphanalia needed ( I am sure im not the only one with a shop that is just outside of available internet service).

Plus this thing seems very rugged, completely sealed and no need to worry about dust, dropping it etc.

Does anyone know if this is available for android? I have an old tablet that is just laying around and this would be a good use for it.

I'd get one except for the wires. My computer is located at the far right of the machine so would have to drape the wire all the way across the thing. I like the Logitech K400r idea. I'm going to order one of those. I've been thinking about a remote keyboard for a while. With Christmas, I can get the wife to buy one for me and make it a present.

Cool. We will have to try and meet up in 2016 Ken! I am scheduled to go to Atlanta for the IWF show, with one of my employees for a few days. Not sure but I will try and make another Aspire workshop too, if time allows. I still need to get up to speed from last May, lol.

Keep in touch!

Just an update - after a week and using the bumpbar, I really appreciate this thing. Makes things very convenient.

You will find it useful. I use mine every time I run the machine now, even tough my computer is in a better location that previously, I still love having the bumpbar to get up close to the bit and be able to move/set/zero/etc the bits without having to go back and forth from the keyboard.

I wish I was there... but it is crazy at work, and I have a large kitchen and another case goods job to finish for next week.

It was a great first day for me (missed Thursday) Mike Mezalick gave a fantastic presentation at the end of the day - worth the trip on its own!

But, dissapointed w/ Shopbot participation. I thought there would be more of a presence from them (there was a Desktop Max there, but never anyone with it).

Well it is an Aspire camp, and not a specific CNC brand camp... Since Jim is a heavy Camaster user it makes sense they have a presence there.

I was there the previous two years, and the first year there was some one from Shopbot there with a desktop, but nothing last year.

Enjoy!

Aspire Camp...camheads for sure...no control software issues there. Wireless remote a must.

Is this unit good for the SB?

Are there other units recommended?

I am holding off ordering the bumpbar while I research other options. That wireless ProxSmart CNC remote looks cool. And if I had an Android app, that would be most ideal. The link for the app4lumia .apk is failing for me every time, and it's rather outdated anyways. Says for Android 2.0. Well, that's 3 years old.

I use a Logitech 710 about $35 Amazon etc
DO NOT use the joysticks just set them
to zero response in the options
there is an easy interface that allows you to add
pauses to key enteries so things like
C 3 now work And you can program a button to
cause the cursor for XY and page up/down to use
your fixed tiny increment
I am not in a shop or school so this
is a great option for my use
