I need to cut a ¼” X ¼” slot 2” down the perimeter of a beam… my slot cutter will only cut 1” down and I can’t seem to find anything longer… any ideas?
I’ve been using the bot to run a ¼” end mill the length, but still need to slot the ends. A long slotting bit would simplify this operation!
Thanks!

I have made some custom arbors for those styles of cutters for one-of jobs. With a metal lathe and some decent steel shafting (I just buy O-1 ground shafting, unhardened, and turn the seat, thread it and away you go) you can make up stuff. Turn down your router rpm and your good to go.
Do you have any friends with a metal lathe?

I do the same as what Andrew described, though I don't thread, as long as the arbor shaft hole is machined tight cyanoacrylic glue will hold, in the 15 or more years of making extensions never had one come loose when you do want to replace the bit heat the shank with a torch it will come out.

I have several side cutting bits that are 5" long.
http://www.magnate.net/ if that isn't deep enough call them and see if you can get them to make something or possibly they have something i didn't see.

If you don't have a lot of cuts to make, it would seem simpler to just use a hand held router. Is there a reason you don't want to do it that way?

Well, I have three solutions! Make an arbor, use an extension and buy one long enough to begin with. A sharpening service in the Dallas metroplex had one 4.625 long…
John, when I get the bit, I will use it in a hand router!
For those curious… I’m carving the face of 5” X 12” X 72” mantels… to do this, we are band sawing 2” off of the face and gluing it back on after carving. Sometimes the re-glue isn’t perfect. When necessary, we cut a slot at the glue line, inlay a contrasting band of wood and make lemonade from lemons! BTW, the ones with inlay go for $50.00 more…

Tricky Steve:)
Like My carpenters weren't happy with the glue line on the lock mitre joint on my corner trim...so they put 2 shallow thin kerf cuts the thickness of the board on the corners.
Wood workers spend so much time trying to see which kerf has the glue, they blow right by the corner glue line:)
Would it be faster to simply add 2 more kerfs, so it looked like a decorative feature?
Aaah! THERE are the leaves and acorns! :) :)
NICE cutting!

Ha! You’re showing your age if you even know what S&H green stamps were! These photos were taken at a “Meet the artisan” hosted by our distributor… True to form, orders were light at the two-day event but the phone has gone crazy since!

Nice looking mantels Steve! I still love that oak leaf v carve design you do!
