Town signs

I am making a set of three signs for our town the ones we have are vinyl on aluminum reflective green.

The wood is hemlock kiln dried and glued up the haves will be glued up with a spline joint for alignment.

The shop bot did the 2d cutouts and text the texturing I am doing by hand.

The small one was a prototype, the fence line I extended and I will tone down the established panel to an off white it pulls to much attention away I think being pure white.

Looks great Brian. We have a lot of hemlock around here but I have never used it because it is supposed to hard to work with. Did you find it wanted to rack or fuzz?

Bob, Hemlock is hard to work with but holds up really well, it can chip and is prone to ring shake I find that in the boards when ripping the boards for glue up and cut around the shake, I keep the boards around 3 inches and alternate the grain I have signs over ten years old holding up fine.

I do a lot of relief carvings with it, in my experience it holds up a lot better than pine kiln drys fast and does not get moldy.

Nice to see another large wood sign posting. I will have to try some hemlock one of these days. The compression of history often surprises me, only 50 years after your town was formed Wisconsin became a state.

Kinda loved it without the paint,( but I Love wood)(except bridge need something) and of course you would have lost the fork in the road:)

I like them plain too, but these signs will be seen from a distance all the detail will be lost to all besides pedestrians.


They need some punch for attention.

Love the work, wish my Hemlock deck had survived better, but boy nailing green Hemlock will hold a nail till death do us part (or dry rot):)
Local mill stopped cutting Hemlock timbers 12 yrs ago:( and then stopped Cedar.
They MUST like it or they're crazy!
When do your shows start? Been thinking to try to get Dad to drive to one.

Scott its 6 foot long 53" tall I am going to make caps for the posts they are pressure treated 4x4s already in, I will spruce it all up don't want to get too fancy.

I will post pictures after installation

If the 4X4 are already in, head down to the big box store and get some vinyl post covers. Anything is better than a simple green treat 4X4 sticking out of the ground.

I will chamfer stain and make caps, not hard to dress up a post, plastic would be the last thing I want next to a wood sign.

Installed the first sign today. Made caps for the posts and routed a cove on each corner.

They will be staining the flower box brown.

Actually I understand it is a reference to what is considered the home of the hardest golf course in the world!!

This town does have some history most of it was claimed by NYC for the new reservoir system in the 30s the original town is under the neversink and roundout reservoirs. the resivoirs were created by damming up the neversink river and flooding the valleys.

At that time a law was passed to prohibit the sale of alcohol to keep the construction men from drinking, it was just this last year we finally repealed the law after several voting attempts to overturn it and can now buy a beer in the township. I am not originally from here so like most small towns your an outsider until several generations are buried. Its a nice little place with an involved community.

3rd and last sign installed.

After I was done routing the posts I stared sanding with my random orbital to smooth things up a contractor pulls up and interrupts me to tell me I am wasting my time sanding nobody will see that close anyway.

I thanked him for his opinion and told him I don't work half assed

Why would someone bother to even do that, I am not wasting his time he did waste mine though.
