First largish Topo cut (Paul Rowntree's Topo).
Headwaters of the Allagash Wilderness Waterway in Sugar Maple.
Roughing was 1:20 using a Centurion .25" FEM downcut in .125" passes with .02" allowance.
TBN didn't show the streams and narrow sections of river or valleys as well, so using an Onsrud 37-23 engraving bit for details at 20% stepover.
This one's for me, and I've slogged and kayaked the area 8 times so wanted the detail.
About 14 hours left to go:)
Thanks Paul!
Going to be a looong day:)

North is on left, and it only covers the Lake section(50%) of the 100 mile "Standard" trip.

Did this little one yesterday from scratch with "Topo" as practice.
Cherry and Southern Maine Coast from York to Sebago lake.
Beach/marsh areas are difficult....NEED to get the hang of "BigTopo" so I can raise Land up on a .01" "pedestal to differentiate Water/Land a little more.
Z scale is exaggerated X2

49% done.
Lakes and rivers smooth as glass:)

All nighters don't seem as easy as they used to:)
Funny thing, I went to put a thinned coat of Tung on it last night with a foam brush....started flooding it on the right....and it took me a second to realize the excess was flowing from lake to lake and following the river!! :D
Don't know why I was surprised, but then started flooding the tops of mountains and watching it flow down the streams....half to the Allagash River, and Half to the St. John River:)
Be a great teaching aid for watersheds/dam effect/flash flooding etc.
Needs some burnishing and several more coats of Tung and Tung/wax.
Think I'll try some more thinned coats and let it flow downriver to darken/gloss up the rivers/streams/lakes. :)

Oh, Just started this one 15 minutes ago, in a Birdseye Maple slab cutoff for Dad's Maine Guide Bob we'll see next week.
The Narrow Pond on left is where he built his fishing camp(Johnson's Allagash Lodge) with the logs on the land with chainsaw and a generator. Nearest tar road and powerlines is a good 60 miles.
I left the live edge and the saw marks on the side as and like the end grain splits, as he's as cracked as I am, and has a few rough edges also :)
Only a 4 hour cut thank goodness....That 19 hour cut wiped me out:)
Not a lot of figure in this piece, and wanted to see how it cuts as I have 150bf of 8/4 in the rafters.
Running 20,20,18K with that same Onsrud 37-23.

Yep, but these are for myself and the house...doing areas that bring back memories, and with wheelchair, will maybe never see again.
Just finishing and sanding/burnishing today. (and experimenting with trying to make ponds and lakes stand out)

These 2 are almost done.

That's really cool, watching how the Tung flowed... I live near Mount Rainier and that would be one way to consider/show how the lahar might flow if/when it blows!

Yep, first time I noticed it was when I flooded the Allagash with thinned Tung, and realized it was "flowing" down the river:)
Playing with various viscositys to flow the rivers and lakes to highlite them a bit more.
Lakes worked well with 100% Tung as the surface tension kept it within the boundaries and I didn't have blot it off for a couple hours.
Just did that one again with 80/20 Polymerized Linseed/Beeswax wood butter with a Q-tip really thick and left on overnight before using a Star horsehair shoebrush to spread the excess onto the rest of the model, and wiping off after 40 minutes. Like the result, and it's easier.

Is where I got my first 2 models, and he also has that Mt.Ranier one at true dimensions.
He's a really nice guy who teaches as a second job. He REALLY wants people to use the as educational models, but until I posted a couple "Makes" he'd never seen them as a wood model. As he said, "I Love my 3D printer, BUT nothing can beat the beauty of Mother Nature".
So if you do make one, consider sending a "Make" onto his site. He doesn't have his "Tip"jar set up(regardless of his wife's advice:) so they're free.
You do have to to credit him under the Creative Commons copyright though. Though I don't think he's strict about it, as he said he was "Greatly Humbled" by me carving his name in 1 that I did that was a rush direct gift to Dad.
OH, looked at your site, and was taken by the LYNX :) NICE PICS!!!

Oh, had to look up lahar...some geology wannabe I am:(

Very interesting.....have heard about this before but you have got my interest again.......it could be used to accurately copy a topographical area for class room based night vision goggle training. It's called a Terrain board, used extensively in the military.....I've used one myself. You put model vegetation, buildings, etc on it with pin lights to simulate cultural areas and a spit light to simulate the moon....this way you can demonstrate contrast, shadowing affects during classroom training. More and more NVG training is being done in the civil sector now and is ever growing.
The NVG Terrain board would need to be at least 4 X 4 foot.
I'll have a look at the process more closely now.....
Cheers

LGM did some large area ones in foam that looked pretty good Michael;
http://forum.vectric.com/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=25562
Imagine a 4X4 or4X8 in foam would be fast and inexpensive with a decent sized BallNose?
The props for train sets rocks/grass/trees etc could be good.
For that use locking XYZ in BigTopo would be critical I would think.
Mine are are exaggerated 50-100% in Z to bring out shore details....BigTopo has a feature to raise the land from the water .005-.02" to delineate..Paul's Topo I used doesn't have that feature.
This laptop can't hack a really detailed BigTopo (30M res) of a large area, but have only tried areas 20-40km square centered around a GPS point.
It's interesting stuff to me:)

Thanks Scott, I downloaded his Mt Rainier topo file. I did click on the Tip Jar thinking that if it was clickable that it was set up, but only got a response to join the site, which I did not because I already get too much 'spam' email. I looked to see if he had done Mount Saint Helens, but no. Thanks for your comments on my photography. Not to disappoint, but that lynx photo was taken in a 'game park', a place where the only shooting is done by cameras and these animals are often shot by the movie industry.

Not disappointed, saw that in the description. I have a backyard menagerie in the beaver pond 30' from my back door, and I certainly can't get them to "Sit Pretty":)
