View Full Version : Loosing depth of cut

Was cutting out some panels today and noticed I am loosing depth of the cut so when finished they were not cut all the way through.

I set up a test of just moving the Z up and down a few times and sure enough Z zero keeps getting higher.

I just upgraded my Z and control box shortly ago and haven't cut a lot with it so don't know if that is the problem or not.

here is a video moving the Z from 0 to 2" and back 6 times and I lost almost 1/8"

any ideas?

Thanks
Tim

Tim, you say that everything looks tight, but when you grab on and wiggle it, it's moving back and forth close to 1/8". If it is a PRT, I would believe it, but if it's a PRS, you should check the lower v-bearings for proper adjustment.

On the lost steps, it looks and sounds like you have no ramping in the Z axis motion. What are your ramp settings in VR.

I agree, that router is loose as $h*t. I agree on the lack of proper ramp settings. Go to the [V] [R] sheet and press the "defaults button. Then disassemble the Z and check the pinion to rack lash and make sure the grub screw is tight in the pinion gear

Scott & Gary, Yes I did see that movement and will get it tightened thank you. Will try to disassemble the Z today and check gear and tighten.

Thanks again

Adjusted lower Y rollers and tightened Z pinion, no more lost depth.

Its amazing what you can see in a video, everything felt tight. I also noticed I am pulling hard enough to almost skip a step on the X steppers. I replaced my pinions about a year ago so I am ordering a new set now.

Here are my ramp speeds 30785

Thanks

It's hard to see, but are your XY and Z jog ramp speeds set at .2? Was the test file a JZ up and down? Set both of those to .4 and also set the the XY and Z move and jog ramp rates to .2.

I bet you'll see a much softer stop/start then. Try your Z test again after the changes.

I have seen some older versions of SB3 not apply the proper defaults when clicking on the reset label, so doing a reset to defaults with UR works better.

Hi Scott
Yes Jog is set at .2 but move is set at .4 and in the video I ran move not jog.
I ran another cut file today and it cut fine except for a part at the top of Y. not sure if it was the last one cut or not but it was not cut all the way through.
Will have to test some more when I get a chance

Thanks
Tim
