View Full Version : Oh well, not much CNC content but I guess quite pretty

So, I had a thick chain sawed slab of a mulberry tree root (about 24"x15"x2.5" sitting forever with wild grain, a little life edge and very much split, warped and and checked. I had it almost consigned to the fireplace. But I changed my mind, gave it a somewhat contiguous border with the band saw and planed it on the CNC machine to 1.25" thickness. Then I filled most of the crevices with saw-dust/glue spackle and let dry for 2 weeks. Finally inlayed the shrunk-back spackle with turquoise grit and CA glue, drum sanded flush, finish sanded and coated with desktop epoxy. I broke the watery gloss by buffing with 0000 steel wool.

This was intended to be a decorative serving platter for parties and I gave it as a gift to an acquaintance. But he ended up hanging this as wall art on his office wall. Oh, well.

Thanks! I would not really call it "art" because I did not really do anything but show the beauty of the mulberry wood grain. Initially, I was a bit skeptical about the turquoise inlay but after all, I think it does not look tacky.
Funny anecdote: We gave it to the mentioned acquaintance (who we really owe something) at a restaurant and the server asked where she could buy such a piece and asked for my web site. Had to reply that I am sorry but this was a unique job.

Whether you consider it art or not, it is. God is a great artist!
