For those of you who are interested in Inlay methods, a forum member on the Vectric forum, Paul Z, developed a V-carve method a while ago for doing very detailed inlays using a V-bit. You can find that information here, including an instructional .pdf file:

With Paul's knowledge, I have been working on a modification to his procedure that uses the new Prism Tool to streamline the machining of the male piece. If this is something that interests you, you can find more details and photos on the Vectric forum at this link:

Attached photo shows a sample inlay of maple in cherry and represents the results you can achieve with both methods.

Tim,

Your timing couldn't be better! I promised myself that I was going to tackle inlaying next and you have made it easier! I have only had my machine for a short time and I am still trying to get up to speed with all the great things it can do!!!
Thanks for sharing!

Mike,

I'm happy to help.

Don't ignore or underestimate the new Auto-Inlay feature. I've used that a few times already and it produces excellent results. The advantage with the above procedure is the ease in doing detailed inlays or those with many parts.

Have Fun.

Tim,

I am using the Inlay feature for making my wooden boxes and it is making my life so easy! I used to tweak the paths manually to make the lids fit right and now I can do it without any extra work. Add to that, I finally broke down and bought a Fein Turbo (it came on Thursday) so I can use vacuum hold-down fixtures when I v-carve the tops of the boxes. It just keeps getting better!
