I have a job order for 33,000 holes at 1 3/4 dia and 2.25 deep in EPS foam. I have cut sample holes in the foam with a 1 3/4 forstner bit with a drillpress and they look good. I don't thank it would be a good idea to put the forstner bit in the PC even at 10,000 rpm. if anyone knows of a spindel/router/drill that can go from 1,000 to 10,000 rpm it would be nice if it had a chuck.
Thanks Eric

For a job of this magnitude you will need a very durable drill but torque should not be an issue. You could consider a standard simple 1725 RPM 1/3 hp motor with a 1/2" coupler to the shaft of a forstner bit. While not a "pretty" solution I think this would greatly outlast any drill motor that used brushes. thees motors can be had from grainger for less than $100 and used for $15 A coupler could be made or is available for about $6.00

thanks that looks like it may be the route I take -- but i just found a 1 3/4 router bit that can plunge cut that deep at eztooling.com (neet search on there page).
thanks Eric -- going to grainger for a look

Eric,
is there a reason you can't use a 3/4 in long shank bit with spiral cut? I have pocketed wooden
mugs 4in deep 4in dia like this..

Dan,
I think that would be slower?

why not just strap a drill in place of the router?
