Here are a few images, showing the use of two Drill Press Vise's for mechanical clamping on my 48 X 48 PRSalpha ShopBot.

The Base thickness on each vise is different, so I placed a common sized shim on each end of the vise's to make the "Z" surface level.

I also can use just one Vise to hold small (cube) blocks, like Baby Blocks, for Carving.

Also note that my keyboard is a wireless Bluetooth Logitech, that works great in the electrically noisy shop.

The vise's are bolted to the SB table using 3/8-16 UNC Studs threaded into nutplates under the table.

Nice vice work!

It would be nice to replace the metal holding part of the vice with delrin or wood so it won't kill the bit if you have an accidental strike.

Great idea. I have an idea for a modification of your idea. I'll give er' a try tomorrow. If it works I'll post a pix here otherwise, you'll never hear about it!
Thanks for posting. Russ

George I like your tabletop, it seems far more stable then mdf but how do you keep from cutting into it? Are you doing most topical carvings? Did you have to surface it when you first put it in?

Jack,

My table top is maple butcher block slabs from McMaster-Carr.

After bolting down to the SB frame I had to remove about .015-025 inch from them to achieve a flat surface.

I use any old scrap wood, MDF or even Peg-Board for a buffer between the table top and my projects.

So far so good. I have not harmed or cut into the top yet.

George

PS, see this link for more info on the table top.
