Folks,

In this thread there's a discussion about using a 3/8" collet with the Milwaukee 5625 router...
http://www.talkshopbot.com/forum/messages/7/13855.html

I contacted a shop that sold Milwaukee collets. According to them the collet that is talked about in this thread will not work with the 5625 - only a 1/4 and 1/2 collet and nut assembly is available.

Here's what I'd like to know - has anyone actually, *personally* bought the 48-66-1000 3/8" collet and used it in the 5625? I know it wouldn't be the first time that a vendor incorrectly said a part wouldn't work, but they were pretty emphatic about it.

A real-world answer would be GREATLY appreciated!

No. Unless I could see it before I buy, I'm not willing to take the chance of buying something that doesn't fit.

I did bot a split sleeve to chuck in 3/8" shank with success but under the lower end RPM...

The other way around would be to get an extension that handle, say, 1/16 to 3/8" shank. This extension doesn't necessary need to be extending; you can cut it to length. I believe Enco sell one and a fellow Botter gave me another reference to J&L INDUSTRIAL SUPPLY (http://www.jlindustrial.com/). Sorry, I don't have the exact link to page handy...

I just looked up a 48-66-1000 3/8" collet and the picture is definitely not the right collet.

I bought a 3/8" collet from Amazon last summer and it works just fine. It was only the compression portion of the collet, not the nut, and as I recall it wasn't cheap, but I like it better than using the adaptors. I used an old nut from a 1/2" collet. I will have to go back through my files to find the part number, and I will try to do that soon.

So there we have it - Jay has actually used that collet in the 5625. Thanks Jay!

Does it really fit the chuck (collet shank) taper correctly? Does it really fit the collet nut correctly? According to the picture, it won't...!

After reading Jay's post I tried a 3/8" PC Collet which I had and it seems to tighten and hold fine. It looks to have the same taper but I have no way of measuring. I haven't used it yet but thanks Jay. I never would have tried it without your post.

Paco,

I know that the picture on Amazon looks kind of wierd, but that is what I ordered and in person it looks just like the other Milwaukee Collets.

Thanks for the informations Jay (and all).

You guys get those collet very cheap; I've payed around 55-60.00$can here! Either collet/nut or just collet. It's crazy. But I got the brushes for 6.00can pair!?!?!? Bearings are around 5.00$ each!??!?!?

PS: I made up a brushes servicing procedure for the MK 5625 on my BLOG. (http://pacosarea.blogspot.com/2007/01/servicing-milwaukee-325hp-router-5625.html)

Ok... I ordered the mysterious 3/8" collet and it is definitely from the same series as the 48-66-0985 1/4" and 48-66-1015 1/2" collets. So, for the record, the 3/8" collet #44-66-1000 matches the others and in real-life looks completely different from the picture in Amazon. There doesn't appear to be ANY reason why this wouldn't work in the 5625.

The problem is that it's ONLY the collet, not the collet and locking-nut set. How the heck do you get a lock nut onto this thing, and how do you get one off of the other sets? Anyone else who ordered one must have received it without the nut like I did, and therefore must have solved this problem. My concern is damaging the collet fingers or surface if trying to press the nut on or off.

Thanks!

Michael,

thanks for the confirmation.

Check out your user manual (you can get one from the MK Web site if you thrown away yours), they demonstrate how to get the nut off the collet and back on. It's a matter of a snap... you probably can get the nut on itself from your local MK part supplier.
