View Full Version : What causes "fuzzy" edges in pine using V-bit?

I've been trying to engrave some designs into 1x4 pine (mostly with "flat" grain)and in spite of trying different depts, I'm getting cuts that require lots of sanding. I don't have the time for that!

Is it just that the pine is too soft or is it related to speed of cut and style of bit?

I'm using a V-bit with a speed of 1.0
Ramp speeds are within the 40 to 60% range of the move speed. I've tried slow and quick router speeds.
The bit has 3 cutting edges, made by Amana.
The depth I cut last was .05" but I've tried several depths with the same results.

Most places the V-bit has cut appear fuzzy.
Perhaps I need to set the move speed slower?

if you're going to finish the piece, try putting a coat of sanding sealer on before cutting. that'll stiffen the fibers for a better cut and make them easier to sand off.

Thanks for that tip David :-)

I'll try it out on the next pieces I cut.
