I am cutting 3/4" deep by 1/4" wide slots in rosewood and birdseye maple using a 1/4" down cut spiral(Onsrud). The cut is across the grain and upcut bits tearout too much and straight bits break. What would be the best feed rate, porter cable router speed, and how many passes should I be taking?

if these are plunge cuts, I'd recommend against plunging more than 1/4" with a down spiral bit. if the shavings have some place to go, then cutting 3/4" depth at a speed of .75 using a four flute down spiral bit at around 20000 rpm should be OK.

Eugene;

You may want to contact Onsrud, I'm sure they would happy to advise you. At one time, their website had feeds & speeds charts for all their bits - try the "catalogs" area.
