This is an excerpt of an email I got from Onsrud regarding chip load data for the 1.25" spoiulboard cutter.

***"You can still run this spoilboard cutter around 14000rpm with a feed-rate anywhere from 400-600 inches per minute."***

Really 400-600 ipm???

I run it about 10 ipm with a 40% overstep. at 15000. Am I doing it wrong or is Onsrud overconfident?

If you have an Alpha, you can surface the table anywhere from 8 to 12 inches per second - although I would turn the RPM up to say 18,000 to get a good finish at those speeds. If you are running a Standard, you can surface in the 4 to 6 IPS range and 15k.

Whether you are crazy or not is debatable...

Ffaelen:

Shopbot uses inches/second for speed rates.

600 / 60 for the inches per second = 10 inches/second.

Doesn't 6-10 inches/second sound reasonable?

My bad I got my inches/minutes mixed up. and yes that sounds better.

Ffaelan...
We routinely surface our spoilboard using a 2.5" diameter insert surfacer at 8 ips (480 ipm) with a 2" stepover and .030 per pass. And could go faster. We lower the rpm to 12000 as it seems to shear the surface rather than burnish. This seems to make the spoilboard more porous. These are numbers for an Alpha machine.
