As I use my SB keyboard, clearly there are keys I use hourly, certainly daily,
and there are keys I never touch.
I've been thinking about coloring certain keys for awhile now, and thought I might put the matter up for discussion.
I'm sure I'm re-inventing the wheel,here,
but please make suggestions based on your experiences.

I foresee Green R and ENTER keys,
and I'm thinking of a custom SPACEBAR key in Screaming Safety Orange:
and then of course X,Y and Z keys (in Yellow?)
What else? J and H keys(how many times a day does one JH?)
Any suggestions? Photos??!
Several of you creative people MUST've done this before...

Thanks for any help.

Sounds neat.

Good idea!

...though I go blindly (watching the tool) most of the time!

Slightly off topic but........
How many of you have z -zeroed, and then, when zeroing either x or y, accidently pressed the z key a second time, zeroing z where you dont want it?
And how many of you have done this and not noticed

Mike,
Or if you have fingers and glasses like me:

JX -10
ENTER

WHAT THE.......

Yes the x and z keys are right next to each other aren't they. I have learned to look befor I leap(again).

more common for me is to, when inserting or typing a JX command at the end of a file to move the bit clear of the workpiece, is to accidentally type JZ, 24 (for instance), with obvious results. Now I double check every time.

I do use a wieless keyboard and mouse, with good results. They are made by Logitech, and came together in a package with a single receiver. I can use the keyboard up to about 8-10 feet from the receiver, or almost to the other end of the SB.

Some people make their own "keyboards", using this IPAC (http://www.ultimarc.com/ipac1.html) module.

Discussing keyboard layouts, with the possible use of colour, has something in common with this thread (http://www.talkshopbot.com/forum/messages/28/11398.html) - a standard office-type QWERTY keyboard is not the ideal device for controlling a machine tool.

Another solution to my human error (whenever this happen!)... no more crash on too high a Z value whatever the tool bit.

...and useful for other programming too.

....and your cure for too low a z-value?

Good luck, good programming, table base coordinates... sometime nothing.

Lots of amazing responses to all kindza things, guys
but no color suggestions (based on experiences?) for my keyboard...
Anyhoo, I'm soon going to the Mall to buy 3 or 4 difrnt colored Magic Markers/Highlighters,
and see what I can do on Monday morning to make those pertinent keys stand out when I'm working quickly without my glasses on!
- that's pretty much what my request was all about...avoiding squinting when looking for some silly little letter engraved on a small key.

Here's a tryout(an old,disused keyboard) of what I'm thinking of...
The keys I've hand colored are those keys I use dozens of times a day,
with or without my reading glasses on!
