What VFD will it take to run my 3HP, 230V, 3 phase spindle?
Is it a special VFD to convert single phase to 3 phase?

Roger,

You need to make sure the VFD will handle single phase to three phase conversion. If you are running a 3hp spindle you will need a VFD rated for 6 hp or higher due to converting single pahse to three phase.

So, it needs to be a special VFD made to convert single phase to 3 phase. I can't use a larger VFD and only use 2 wires in. It sounds like an expensive item. I will have to search the Delta sight a little longer.

yes, you can get 3phase by inputing 1 phase
I 've been doing it for years. some people say you need to "oversize" by 50%, but I have been running a 7.5hp Perske off of a 10hp Saftronics G3 for 7 years.
that said, if you look at driveswarehouse.com
or Precision electric you will find a 1 phase input 5hp drive for about 400-450.

According to the manual, my Hitachi 3HP Model SJ100 will accept 220V single phase power if it is connected to input terminals L1 and L3. This model will deliver 3HP output power from single phase input power. You should be able to download the manual for the VFD you are interested in from the factory's website.

I purchased a 16" Delta radial arm saw at an auction 6 years ago from a local lumber yard that went out of buisness. It is 5 HP 3 phase with a 3 to 5 HP Ceadarberg Phase converter. It ran for years at the lumber company and it still runs great.

If anyone is interested I am going to sell it as soon as I get some time to run an add.
