I don't make many signs, however when I do I hand paint the letters with an oil based paint to get a weathered look. I usually use Oak and the signs are V carved. Is there a way to obtain this weathered look without spending 30 minutes hand painting the letters? Any help would be great. Thanks, chuck

PS: The picture below was done in PartWorks so the letters are not weathered looking.

wanna look old and weathered!! wash or spray the color into the depths of the carve then sand off excess on surface, rag wash some vinegar and muratic acid on the oak (wear a mask in ventilated area) rub out some of the softwood (while it is moist) with a wire brush as needed, might even reapply the acid a bit!!

Chuck,

I'm not sure I know what you're trying to accomplish. Would you be pleased with older wood found around wooden barns or old houses?

I seldom distress wood except a little sandblasting. Sometimes I'll sand the surface of the painted area. Wet and Dry sandpaper.

Please post photo of your intention. Not a computer drawing.
