Since the characters in this font are jaggedy, they do not carve in smooth, graceful shapes. Is there any way to smooth out the letters' vectors so they will carve nicely?

Yes, you can smooth out the letters. I use Gerber Omega software for the smooth tool feature. You can drag the tool over the letter and in seconds achieve the desired result. Most vector programs do have a smooth feature. I have found that Gerber's detail editing tools have less limitations.

Sarah,

Your website is excellent as well as your signs. What 3D software are you using?

Hey Joe,

Thanks for the compliments. I am using Gerber Omega. It's pricy but well worth the investment. You could always use Adobe Illustrator or Corel Draw, it's just that Gerber is just...Better!

Okay, maybe I answered the question wrong. I do not use 3D software at this point. I am not doing any true 3D carving yet. I only use Illustrator, Corel Draw, and Gerber Omega for designing.

Jim,

I can't figure out why your letters aren't smooth. Is this due to the font? If so that's easy to solve. Could you post a photo to give us a better idea of the problem?

Joe,

If you zoom in on the characters in this font, you can see they have jaggedy edges. It's supposed to be that way since the font is supposed to make things look old. But when I carved the quarterboard, the letters looked funny. Geoff over on the shopbotter message board smoothed them out for me. I sent him the file of the sign, and he sent it back with smooth letters.

I'd like to know why my post in this thread (about using Rhino's smooth function) was deleted?

Hey Kevin,

There are 2 threads about this. Your posting about Rhino is in http://www.talkshopbot.com/forum/messages/312/26162.html

Jim,

Glad Geoff was able to help you smooth this one out. Your right this is a very interesting font and gives much character. Should be used more often.

I'm posting an example for those not familiar with it.

Joe,

You can see how jaggedy the letters looked when carved. Here's a photo of how the sign came out agfter the letters were smoothed out:

BTW, in searching for this font (I had to match it for the antique store I made the sign for), I found a graphic design forum that voted it the 4th most overused font.

Nice sign Jim. The font was certainly smoothed out. I wouldn't have been able to identify it.

I've can't recall seeing this font on a sign, have you?
