I vcarved the trim for our windows. but I used rough cedar to somewhat go with the siding. no real way to fill it in with color and clean the excess off. so I wonder what paint would bring out the vcarving the best. flat semi gloss or gloss? I am debating on white or a dark blue in color.

Sounds like you've already carved it, but if you have more to do, you could use Dr Crumleys Snake Oil mask - it'll work on rough cedar pretty well.

If your're not familiar with the process, search for it here, someplace there is a write up on the method.

I thought about using that method. but it would have been a paint to cut the wood and paint it in my shop then coat it. Plus after doing the painting I think having a contrasting color may have been a bit much for a house.
I primed it and put the first coat on of some off white since it is only 2.50 for rodda's missmixed and I will use white with a gloss between gloss and semi gloss. the carving stands out fine.
