Maybe someone has done this before, but I thought it was worth mentioning.
I was making a plaque from MDF. The first thing I always do is coat it with schellac on both sides as a vacuum seal.
So I cut the lettering into it and then sprayed the entire surface with Rustoleum hammered copper paint. To my suprise the precoated areas came out Hammered Copper. The cut areas that had not coating came out Silver. Makew a real nice sign.

Interesting development, cant wait to see photos but may just have to experiment myself to see it up close. Thanks for the input.

I just try Anthony’s paint experiment. I am also getting a nice hammered copper finish on the coated areas and a funky flecked silver on the uncoated areas. Maybe some of the pigment is being wick into the MDF and leaving a silver color behind? If you like the color combination you could spray the sign once and get two colors. Would save the trouble masking and painting twice. Mark

This type of thing should work for other types of paint and colours too? Come on guys, if you are really interested, why wait for Anthony to post pictures - just do it!

I had a similar effect when a client brought me an aerosol of gold car paint. (Unfortunately, the gold looked rubbish!)

Thanks for posting it Mark. My files are to big to post so I would have to reduce the resoulion first, but that is exactly what I do. It also works with the Bronze color.

I like the basic shape and v-carv. It would look very good with any color although the copper's very nice also.

Keep up the good work.

I just had to try this and finally the opportunity showed up. Made some horseshoes out of Baltic Birch, two coats of shellac, then carved and sprayed on the Hammered Copper paint. You can see a light silver on the exposed edges. It was a nice effect, and I will be using it again. Thanks for the tip!
