I want to do some engraving in diecast aluminum that looks like this.

What kind of bit and where would I find it. I have an engraving bit from onsrud, but it is more of "V" bit and doesn't do fine detail very well.

It may be the software and toolpath that is giving you the problem. To engrave in aluminum you need to take very shallow stepdowns and keep it cool. The piece in your photo is definately v-carved and the fine detail is the result of the bit raising up at the end of each cut till there is almost no contact. You should be able to do this in v-carve or artcam pro, but would never be able to pull it off with partwizard.

Keith, look to the Onsrud 37-00 and 37-20 series solid carbide engraving tools.
the 37-00 series are 60° on 1/4 shank
the 37-20 series are 30° on 1/4 shank
tip sizes for both go from .005 to .090

You didn't say which Onsrud bit you have, but the 37-01 & 37-21 have .005 tip sizes which will get down to what you want to do. I'm guessing you may have a 37-50 series rather than the engraving bit?

Keith, Any of the bits Gary listed should work for you. Depending on the thickness I would probably use the 60 degree over the 30. With the 60 you can get your width without having to go too deep.
