Sure it's not ultra light mdf? Where I buy mine, UL is 18mm and standard is 19mm (3/4")...

Yeah.. Get this. Im doing all the molding in an 11 story hotel in Long Beach, Ca. I quoted it as hallways 3/4" Poplar base (because of moisture) and 3/4" mdf (we will have it milled) but now I cannot purchase any and I need 20,000 linear feet of 3/4X6"

I tried to tell the gay designer but they are insisting on 3/4.. and it has already been bid!

Ever just want to club a designer to death?

If you would like i can see if my suppliers can get it . The only problem is youre on the west coast and i am on the east coast. OR just tell your designer friend that you loose the extra thickness in the milling and sanding process ( maybe while holding him out of the tenth floor window) Good luck and let me know if i can help...

looks like a us thing. there is still 3/4 out there till the stock is gone.
my last two sheets had white faces. wonder if all the thinner stuff is painted?

I called my MDF supplier (Weber Plywood in Tustin CA (714) 259-1100 (800) 432-7300), they CLAIM that 3/4" MDF is still .75". They also claim to have checked with the mills, who laughed at the story. So at least in Southern Ca there seems to be no shrinkage of MDF...

Its definitely not .75" I don't buy directly from Weber (takes an hour to get a few sheets over there), but from a local supplier that buys from Weber.

I know it is (or was) possible to get 11/16 MDF. I think that's what is used for veneered MDF which comes out to 3/4" thick. Maybe the supplier got the wrong material and doesn't know it.

I've bought both regular MDF and ultralight MDF (Trupan) here in the SF Bay Area in the past 10 days. The Trupan is prominently marked 18mm, but the MDF from Home Depot really is 3/4" (I just went out to the shop to measure it). Stan

I think David is right about that. A couple years ago, we went to Allied plywood in Virginia to get some 3/4" MDF once. They normally stock it by the trainload but they were out of stock this time. He searched the computer and we discovered that they had lots of 11/16" labeled material. He called their manufacturer and they stated that it was supposed to be sized and used for certain laminates and still work with certain edge treatments.

The MDF that is less than 3/4" is import mdf from china. It is much cheaper than the regular mdf so some companies are selling this instead of the 3/4" stuff so not to raise the prices. Many companies are not telling the full story to the customers about this. They are just selling the thinner stuff as if it was 3/4" mdf. At least that is the story I am getting from a couple of my suppliers. The load I just got this week was full 3/4" when I measured it.

that may be it. of course the place that will deliver any amount carries the less then 3/4" stuff. but my good store seems to have the 3/4" but they don't deliver for under 500.00

At least with sheet goods the thickness is usually marked close to correctly. With mill-cut lumber what once was a 2x4 is now so undersize I expect to find things labeled as 2x4 to be actually 1x2. Imagine that.

I find it annoying that most plywood is 15/32 instead of 1/2. Or 23/32 instead of 3/4. I also want real lumber with correct standard dimensions. At least it is marked as this weird fraction. My hunch is if I were to check the stuff it would work out to an even number of millimeters.

I believe this is a result of our congress requiring all government purchases specify everything in the metric system so we could undermine our economy with import goods.

Fortunately in about 5 weeks there is an opportunity to remind them that it really does matter to me.
