Christmas Time

I figure it is safe to post this picture now as everyone who is getting one of these for Christmas will have their gift soon! I came up with a good way to use small chunks of wood with great grain. Last week I found a small box of unopened battery-powered clockworks that I must have bought years ago and just put up on the shelf. I have some really nice spalted maple, a piece of cherry that was too small to do too much with and a nice slice of red oak I rescued from my woodpile (I have a hard time splitting firewood. I keep finding 'keepers' in the stack!)

How long are the stems on your clockworks?

I had 2 that had short stems (about 3/8") and 2 with longer ones (about 5/8"). I made a pocket file in various depths so I can match it to the clockworks and the wood thickness.

I took a thin slice out of a bigger photograph for the background to make it sort of abstract. Glad you liked it!

seriously, beautiful composition.
The border is weighted nicely to the image.
good ratio of "busy" to places for the eye to rest.
and I love that there is only one number and a fraction of an arc on the image. classic tactic (used well in this case) to imply lots more going on outside the picture

well done.

any chance of a link to a higher rez image? I would love to check out the actual detail on the carving
