I am wondering what most people are using for 3d carving in the way of 1/8 ball end bits.. Is the long cuttin length an an advantage or just easier to break. And where are you buying the bits..

Mitch...
I've been using the tapered end mills & ball end from R.L. Schmitt, and had great success, plus the price is right...

I use centurions tapered ballnose bit however lately i have wanted a bit with a longer cutting surface to reach into a .75 hole and they didn't have one that long.

I use onsrud cutter's ball nose. I cut a lot of HDU and foam so not a lot of broken ball nose bits.

it was an onsrud that I broke.. I liked it for the length.. who said size doesn't matter.. they do seem to be pretty expensive.. I am thinking to find something that won't make me cry when it snaps .. and just keep one around for special occasions...

Mitch, do you purchase directly from Onsrud?
If you find a distributor the cost is less.
Only time I have broken a bit it was my fault.
Doesn't make it any less painful though. I have broken 1/4" compression bits before they even moved an inch. I learned quick.

i don't think there is a distributor north of the border.. I am willing to be corrected. This is only my second bit.. I was not quick enough when the space bar didn't do anything.. all it took was that idiosecond from hitting the space bar and realizing that is was not going to stop..for the bot to drive spindle into the bed. By the time I did slam down the big red button the sparks were already flying.. quite the show..

Have you looked at FS Tool in Canada? I used several of their cutters a few years ago, and if I remember right, they were pretty good bits at a fair price.

If you aren't carving deeper than 1/2" then there are plenty of choices from MSC Direct (http://www1.mscdirect.com/CGI/N2DRVSH?PACACHE=000000114654156)

After my Onsrud tapered bit broke, I replaced it with Centurion tools 1/8" ball nose (http://www.centuriontools.com/router_bits_toolcase/centurion_tools_showcase.html?page=full&cart=12572 7139158431213&__max=6&--eqskudatarq=18US2.52.5BNRES14&id1=374&id2=735 , $20.). All the cutting was done at the end of the bit and for finish cuts usually never more than 1/4" into the material. These bits are a great value for the price compared to Onsrud.

My first post.. I've used Centurion's V bits. I have also bought from http://www.carbideselect.com/longlengthendmillsBALL.php?PHPSESSID=e39dc8dc54772 578693b3c547ed37181 When I needed some long reach ball nose. I have been happy with them. I was able to get a nice 6" long 1/4" ball for a larger project I had to do. it cut very nice. good prices to I thought
