I read the whole topic on the other forum. Very funny stuff, it looks like you've won them over after a rough start.
Cool work, the amazing paint job really makes a big difference.

Fun -- most of the people complaining have someone else mod there rides.. and for what? to suck more gas down while sitting in a parking lot telling everyone how Cool there car is.

love it --

I think its priceless.. if only for the reaction of the guys that don't like it...
I figure you could sell those things... a lot cheaper than the real thing and whats the point in spending all that money when you couldn't really use it on the street anyway..
I'd like to see the looks if I had one on my austin healey bugeye..

Like the bugeye Mitch. Have one the same color in my Dad's garage - 1960.

Wow. A lot of Bugeye owners! I had two Bugeyes, a Mk.II Sprite, and a Mk.I MG Midget.

Then one day I read where the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result every time. So I stopped!

When I was a lad in Anchorage, AK, there was a fellow that had a SB Chevy V8 and Muncie 4-Spd in Bugeye. The driveshaft was essentially a pair of U-joints welded back-to-back. I don't know if he ever drove it or just kept it around the shop as a conversation piece...

Thanks for the reminder!

and just so no one can complain we are off topic.. I have made some parts for the bugeye on the bot.. forward tilting hinges out of aluminum.
Ken .. how long has the bugeye been in the garage.. mine is a 1960 as well..

Mitch,

Worked on and drove it during time I was in high school/college (1980's), but it's been sitting in garage for about 20 years now. Getting it going again is one of those round-toit projects.

The PhotoShop on the Bugeye fooled me! i had a '67 spitfire, which has been MUCH better in memories, that it ever was in real life...My bumper sticker read:
"The parts falling off this car, are of the highest British quality."

I have a question:
I'm using 6mm ABS. Some cuts are designed half-thru, the rest thru. I'm having to run two different files to do this, which requires restarting the machine for the second cut. I'm confused as how to get the 'bot to do this...I put the vectors on different layers, but I'm lost as how to get the machine to see this.

If the two toolpaths use the same tool you should be able to save them to a single .sbp file. What software are you using to generate your toolpaths?

killbucket
02-26-2009, 04:30 PM
I'm using autocad, and directly drawing my toolpaths. I know that somewhere in the file conversion, depth per color can be spec'd, but the info on how to do this is sketchy in the manual. I'm using one Onsrud cutter for everything. I just need the 'bot to make some paths only half thru.

If you are using the ShopBot dxf converter, I have not used it in years but unless something has changed, after you begin the conversion process you will be prompted for the depth for each color "number". Just draw the half-depth parts in a different color than the through cuts. You should end up with a single toolpath with all the cuts.

zeykr

Ian,
Think you should be using partworks. Most of us have not used converter for quite some time and don't remember details on how to use it, but don't think it's well suited to what you are trying to do.

zeykr

Basically, Import your dxf into partworks, then toolpath each layer seperately using the same tool. Then output both the toolpaths to a single .sbp file.

If you can post the dxf someone may be able to get better idea of what you are doing and give more detailed help.

Got Partworks installed and experimenting, and snapped a bit this morning with it. The 'Bot tried to make the part in the wrong location...
So far, SB3 has been serving my needs predictably, and I really don't NEED true 3D machining for my stuff.

All I want to do is have the thing automatically do 2 cuts: one thru, one halfway thru...that's IT...
I've been making two files, and stopping the file immediately on the second, to "nudge" the height.
ALL my work is cutting 2d profiles from sheet ABS, and I need a few steps and counterbores in them. this always translates to a 2-step process.

I've got a dxf with two lines in it, period. One's on the red layer, one's on yellow. I want yellow half thru, red thru.

How the heck do I do this?

I should note that I DRAW my own offsets so far. I have many, many dxf's that serve as actual toolpaths for 1/8 and 1/4 bits, over a year's work. So I can just combine these somehow in Partworks?

zeykr
07-02-2009, 12:46 PM
Normally in partworks you would draw the part you want to cut and toolpath it instead of just the toolpaths, but you can machine along a vector which would work with what you have. You could also do this task easily writing shopbot code directly.

Probably need several answers to help you effectively as far as doing this in partworks.

Where are you zeroing on your material: bottom left or center of material, top of material or bottom? Where are these lines in relation to zero point.

What thickness is your material.

What style tool are you using and what is it's dia?

Can you give us a dimension drawing of the part?

I'll drop you an email. This might be easier working together over the phone.

Page 52 of the Shopbot manual:
"you will be able to use different line colors to define the plunge depth for the Z axis."

Page 53:
"If you designate 2d,...you will be prompted for for a depth for every color of line (or layer) that you used in your drawing."

Been over a year now, can't make it ask for the depths.

I have .235" thick ABs on the bed. I always zero Z at the cut depth I want, be it thru or short of that. You can imagine how frustrating this has been.
I'm using a 1/4" Onsrud single-flute, no issues there at all.
I'm fine hand-drawing offset vectors, and prefer to do so.
All I want is for the shop bot to cut different colors at different depths, but it doesn't seem to see anything other than the aforementioned "256".

You'll probably need to get with Shopbot tech support or Bill Young about use of the converter this way.

Looked at your website - Neat!. The patterns you show there would work well with toolpathing in partworks.

Thanks, and thanks for your assistance.
When I do FC in Shpbot console, it shows headings for layer and depths, but no boxes below them...hmm.

killbucket
07-02-2009, 01:53 PM
Very odd, It should see at least some of the layers here...the vectors end up in the sb file, but all cut at the same depth.

I even edited the UX_DXF.ini file for red and yellow, but it ignores this also...

(Does silly end-Zone Dance)Figgerd it out!

In CAD, the color can't be set to "by layer".

In the arrowed box, set the color desired.

THEN, the color and depth boxes can be set during FC. And yes, It works!!!!

THANK YOU for answering my posts!!!

Ian,

The colors in your file are defined "by layer", with the lines on different layers. Try defining them "by color", so that the color of each entity is specifically declared.

I don't know what version of AutoCAD you're using but AutoDesk keeps modifying their formats which causes problems. In general you're better off saving files in the earliest version of dxf that you can. I generally save as R12 dxf which seems to work well for 2d stuff.

Here's a screenshot of the FC command after making these changes on your file.
