I have been cutting some 1 3/4" Maple with some pretty good results but I think I can do better and rather than reinvent the wheel I was curious what others may be using in the way of bits and feed rates.

Currently I am using the following:
1/2" triple flute down cut chipbreaker
2.5" IPS 0.3" climb cut per pass to 1.5" then a conventional cut to clean up and tab. I am nesting these pieces out of 6"+ boards.

Thoughts??

Thanks,
Ron

Ron,

If you are happy with the results and the bit is staying nice and cool to the touch, you should be good to go.

This past summer I cut a whole bunch of 1 3/4" quarter sawn white oak for an outdoor bench. I used a 1/4" single flute super 'O' bit at 11K rpm feeding at about 2ips with a max cut depth of 3/8". I had excellent results with this setup.

Just finished a set up the other week cutting arches in 1.75" maple.
Used a 2 flute chipbreaker finisher (ons 60-317)
3 passes, 5ips 16800rpm
The final pass was a cleaning pass.
