if any one would help i would appriciate it. i have aspire and am new to it. i have tried for days to do a simple project and can not get it done nor i see it in the help videos. i am doing a top for a jewelery box (3/4" pine) and want to put a 1/4" deep oval in the center of it. i would also then like to put a 3D elk (bought from vectric) on top of the oval so the carving is equal to the top of the wood height. which would make the elk .25" thick. Every time I try this (8 days now) I get an error saying that my model is to thick. It usually comes out greater than 1.1" If any one could help me out I would appriciate it.
Thanks again

Dennis,
This is a WAG but what do you have you material thickness set at?
Good Luck!!

Wayne,
I have it set to .75". I can do the oval pretty easy with the create pocket tool but then when i import the 3D and scale it down to .25" and set it inside of the 1/4" oval it tells me that my model is to thick. i am kicking my self for not figuring it out by now.

Dennis,
If the attached picture is what you want here is how I did it.
1. Set my material to the size of the top with origin at the center
2. Used the ellipse tool to draw the oval and centered in the material
3. Imported the 3D Elk image in version A, set the size I wanted and centered in the material
4. Open Component Manager, select the Elk, and using the Set Exact Height box enter 0.25. Press the space bar for 0.25 to take effect.
5. Now select your oval vector and open the Toolpaths menu. The box should open allowing you to select where in the material you want the image. I would place it a very small amount below the surface (0.01") to be sure you don't end up with any flat spots in the elk.
6. Select 3D Roughing Toolpath and set this up
7. Select 3D Finish Toolpath and set this up. I used the offset option here because it will give you a better edge on the oval border. You could always do another toolpath using the border and a Profile IN toolpath to clean it up.
Hope this helps, let us know.

This is just a guess cuz i don't know this app but I believe james models already have a thickness/depth of at least .25 don't they?
It sounds like you are trying to take a "A" style model and trying to make it similar to a "B" style model correct?
If a model is too thick try to scale your models Z height. The thickness of the model needs to fit within the confines of your .75 thickness. Check both the thickness of the model and the position the model is at within the .75 thickness. If you have a .25 model sitting on top of the .75 material that might be causing an error. Just guesses...

Looks like Tim's given you good directions. For the record all the Vector Art 3D models are scalable (depending on your software's ability) - there is no standardized height but typically they are around 0.25" at around 6" in size. Other than losing depth contrast/detail there is no reason you cannot scale the depth of a model up or down to fit your part.
Cheers,
James

i like to get the depth as much as possible and scale the model as high within that as possible it makes detail "POP" a bit better!!

Sorry for the delay in getting back to everyone. I was out of town for awhile and am still trying to get my feet under me. Anyways, Tim, thank you worked like a charm. I am learning that the proceedure of the steps is critical. Thanks again. I should be getting the wild life design package in the mail today so I am very excited to start cutting more items.
Thanks again everyone for your support to the severly challenged.
