I got a dxf file e mailed to me. I downloaded and save to desktop.
When I try to open in part works the blue box opens up the it freezes there. I have to reboot to get rid of it. I can open the file in part wizard but I don't use part wizard any longer. Any suggestions what I am doing wrong?

David,
Are you double clicking the dxf file on the desktop to open? Does it open if you first open PartWorks then select open an existing file?

can you one click/right click on the file and bring up option list and go down to "Open with" and pick the program you want to open it with?

Jack, tried that. part works froze.
I get files sent quite a bit and don't have problems. I must have accidently changed something.
I have an option to use "main executable" which opens it with part wizard. I don't want to use part wizard, is there something I can change?

right click once on the file hiliting it. THen the options box pops up.
go down to "properties.Under the "general" tab it should say "type of file" and "opens with" and a button that says "change"

click that and it opens a "open with" box and you go down and pick the program you want to open the file all the time.
Whether that fixes your crashing problem i can't say but it will change the program that opens that file.this is under XP.

Even though you don't want to use part wizard....can you save it as a dxf in parts wizard?

I'm a Mac guy so I miss out on the nuance of some of these things...but I remember a silly thing I learned from an marine engineeer a while back...if the file name is really long it can mess up files.
Can you have the person do a new save-as and resend the dxf with a file name like abc.dxf???

It might have 3d info in it, or be a file of splines.

Chuck's suggestion is a good one, open it in parts wizard and see if you can export it?

If you want to email it to me, I can open it in AutoCad and see what's up with it.

It could also be made with a newer version of cad. I use autocad 2010 at the school I go to and if it saves as autocad 2010 dxf I can not open it with an older version. But it stil shows as a dxf file.

David,
Try opening PartWorks first then select to open an existing file. Browse to the location you have the file saved. Do you get an error message?

It sounds like you are double clicking the dxf file to open it. If this is the case PartWorks is reporting an error message but is hidden behind the blue splash screen.

Thanks for all the help.
Ryan, that is exactly what was happening. I could barely see a message box behind the "splash screen." I had to reboot to get rid of it. It opened just how you told me to...
Thanks........
