Has anyone else caught this? What happens is that it disables your virus protection then has a browser redirection componnent to ({word trap}unnamed website because we don't want to offend the kiddies that read this forum, jeez!) website, then in my case my computer freezes up.

In my other thread of "XP question" i was told how to get into safe mode and was able to operate the computer to transfer files. So if anyone else has been hit with this and has a fix let me know. I can't find anything specific on microsoft.com because i don't know its name. Two other people i know got it so it isn't just something i downloaded.

Jack, I brought my shop comp home and connected to the internet and was immediately whacked with something. I couldn't get it off my computer and it disabled AVG Antivirus. It changed my restore date to the time it downloaded itself on my comp.
http://www.pctools.com/ was my solution.
I just renewed another year. I am happy with it.

I had a similar Trojan get loaded on my wife's computer earlier this year. She got it through a PDF file. If you don't have the latest version of Adobe Acrobat AND Standard you are at risk for that one. It was very nasty. Not only did it disable her virus checker (McAfee) from updating, it also redirected all of our browsers so that we could not access the McAfee or Symantec sites. It also looked for FTP software on her system and when it found Filezilla it was able to steal her passwords and hijack our web sites. Then it went ahead and loaded the Trojan code into our web site files. What a mess that was to get cleaned up.

We cleaned it all up with Norton 2009.
