What I am looking to do is position or import a 3d model into my 2d project. Essentially, I need to carve a 3d model into a door. I currently have the basic Shopbot software Cut 3d and Cut 2d and was hoping I wouldn’t need to upgrade to V Carve Pro, Aspire or some other 3d program. I have ACAD 2000 but was sure I could make that work. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

You can import 3D images into Vcarve Pro (Partworks), but I don't know about importing into Cut 3D or Cut 2d. I import VectorArt3D carvings into signs and plaques I design in Partworks all the time.

Why not just cut them as two different operations? They can be done on the same projcet, without having to combine them.

Kenneth,
My real issue is how to locate the 3d carving on the 2d project. If it was a carving I could cut out and place on the 2d project then no problem. However, I am looking to "dish" out a part of the 2d project with the 3d carving??? Hope this helps.

Don,
Thanks for the heads up on V Carve!! I am hoping for a work around but... probably will have to cough up some $$$ for more software

Thanks for the input guys!

prepare the toolpath in cut 3d and save as a v3d file--- open cut 2d and import vectors from a file (the file you saved) this is the simple method, takes a few minutes to get tit right but it is the same method required in vcarvepro.

only aspire allows manipulation on the file in 3d, test it a bit and more questions will come up, i used this method to put rossettes on columns and 3d on signs, cut 2d will not vcarve but it will set text to vectors for profiling or pocketing,
