Excellent work Danny, I love to see some fun with the bots. Seems all I have time for anymore is work with mine. Seems the fly has a thing for bottled water though?

Danny, what size piece of stock should I make sure to have on the router? In your pic it looks like it was cut out of just a corner of a sheet but when I previewed it, it looks like it is going to take almost a half sheet.

oh, well u have to resize it in part wizard then nest it.

I think the first one I cut I made it work on a piece of 1/4" mdf at like 30" X 48

ryan_slaback

so the cut file you sent is sized for 30 by 48 then?

Ryan what you need to do is open proj wizard. Just set it for a whole sheet 4'x8' then import the dxf and resize the dxf until the notches = the thickness of your material, then you can manually nest it or use software to nest it to see how much material is needed

Danny, you sent the cut file though. All it is is a bunch of shopbot move commands. Part Wizard can't open that.

Ryan: With the cut file you can preview it in SB III., convert to dxf and do your thing

On that note, dave, loading into SB3 I asked in another post, when i did that it also included the carriage toolpaths in the dxf. How do you surpess that?

Don't know if you can Jack-But you can always delete those lines.

I will be posting my 10 dinosaur files and about 25 other animal files as soon as I find them.
They all cut like the fly Danny made and be scaled to any size.
You can view some of them here.

If you want to start making some now drop me a line and I will email them till I can get them up on my site

Jack: I havn't tried it but you may be able to edit the SB file by removing all the jog commands and then converting the file. Since the positioning is generally all jogging and the cutting is all moving, that should leave only cuts. If the file was set up as a single pass file, then you wouldn't have duplicate overlaying lines either.

Ron,
Where you going to post some SBP files?

Pat,

The pictures that Ron has on his website are from Bob Neitzke and as far as I know, Bob never gave those files out--I believe there were some copyright issues since they were scanned from Harbor Freight puzzles, though he did have to change them alot to make them stronger when he scaled them up and to make the slots large enough for the material he was using.

Now, the good news is there is a site with about 10+ "puzzles" in DXF format. The down side is the site is in German and there are no photos of the complete puzzle--so it is going to be a "true" puzzle putting them together.

http://www.blechwelt.com/teil_des_monats/archiv.htm

Now, the files will need to scaled and the slots adjusted, since it looks like this site used a plasma cutter to make theirs. Check out the Eiffel tower. That looks really cool but will probably have to be scaled up really large for all the pieces to be cut out.

Good luck,

Bruce

Bruce is correct on the pictures but not on the files.
I made mine in 1998 and Bill Palumbo made his in 1999 and Bob Neitzke in 2000.
http://www.rngengravers.com/Dinos.htm
We made ours from a drawing from my daughter’s school, she was to make it out of paper but I made it in wood.
The plans were from BG Designs out of Houston Tx and they mailed me 50-60 drawings for me to make the dxf files.
The agreement was I could not use the dxf files but I could make them into a font to use as I see fit.
As you see in the pictures there is not much difference in them.
Over the years I have seen the same plans on websites and in wood magazines, but they look the same.
So the question would be who sold what copyrights to whom.

If y'all haven't seen Bob's site you're in for a treat...I still think his captive-marble mazes are some of the cleverest things made with a ShopBot.

Go to http://www.balsabuddies.com/ and then click the "My Engravings", "My Mazes", and "My Dinosaurs" links.
