Spyware or not?

I am recently having problems with my computer locking up.

I ran AVG spyware and it suspects a ShopBot control file that I downloaded. Has anyone had problems with this?

sounds like a error to me. I found rootkits on my computer. I have the full avg suite and it found them and could not remove them.

AVG is a great product even if it is free, as good as many you might pay for. AVG will occasionally see files as threats when they are not, just as any protective software will. You are doing the right thing...do your research, google it, ask questions. If you find no indications of threat, tell AVG to ignore it in the future. It doesn't hurt to use a couple of the online scans from time to time to double check whatever protective software you are using.

Actually... the shopbot file is a threat... it'll keep you up for hours and cause you to spend money. :-)

Just tell it to ignore. rootkits... bad mojo. Say what you want but I've found Microsoft Live OneCare (not free) very effective in staying up to date, one license covers multiple PC's.
