Ripple

This was one of the first 3d carvings that I did with the ShopBot. I started with a white and black gradient image in photoshop. Then I created a surface in rhino 3d by using the image height field. I created tool paths and sat back for about 10 hours while the machine did its thing.

It is a maple shelf that I found in a building at FSU.

There was A LOT of hand sanding afterword. I then finished it with teak oil.

I like the finish. Now that you have it done what will it be used for?

what grit sandpaper did go down to... looks more than 180 to me.... 220? 600??

I actually gave this to my mom for Christmas last year. It was an initial test. I want to scale it up to something much larger.

I believe I took this to 220. It was rather dense maple and I ended up using one of those triangle finish sanders. I wanted to take it to 400 but it took so long for 220 that I just called it even. In the future I will plan my tool paths and tooling more precisely to cut down on sanding time (go with with grain).

I saw something like this that was used as a particians between sections of a restaurant in Alberta Canada. Instead of ripples i think that it was mountains but still a nice addition.

Might be kind of tough to keep a tea cup from spilling but the quality of the carving and finishing is excellent!:eek::D

A very cool rendering that looks like drops on a liquid surface.
