    The mechanism reminds me of a huge marine diesel's valvetrain

    If you wanted to 'kick it up a notch' paint everything in SculptNouveau Iron & spritz a Tiffany Green patina on it. It will look like it is rusty cast iron

    You are absolutely right about the valve train! I kept thinking it looked like something familiar.
