Canvas Cutting

A friend of mine makes Awnings and Canvas Boat Covers and was looking for a digital measuring system that he can bring out to a boat and digitize points on the metal frame to then upload into software and cut on either knife wielding shopbot. Any links or suggestions would be appreciated (he tells me that he has seen a wand that takes in such data). I have seen the Etemplate camera system at the jamboree a few years back, however that is not what he is looking for.
